NewsRoadcasting: Tech gimmick from EST coming trueMany people have written to me with the news of Roadcasting, a technology that is very similar to the gimmick in Eastern Standard Tribe wherein cars stuck in traffic form ad-hoc peer-to-peer networks, sharing music among themselves (in truth, this idea came from my pal and former business partner, John Henson). It’s pretty cool to see stuff like this approaching reality, I tell you what.

While some might consider Doctorow a booster for the online, wired lifestyle, his books contain subtle but pointed warnings about the flaws of high tech societies. Being a Tribalist, living out of circadian synch with the people around you, relating with people you mainly know as a handle on a screen, encourages paranoia and disloyalty, smartness instead of happiness. Art becomes an object lesson in how such a society can ruin a person, and his salvation doesn’t lie in technology.

Hi,
whilste the concept is very nifty, it just ads another way to get killed, by ignoring the roads scene, as you futz with the electronics.
I do like the concept though. I want to rebroadcast Air America Radio from the web onto the real RF out here in the burbs, just to give peole an idea of what the government is doing to them, and in their name.
move over George Orwell, George W is reality, err unreal, err tripping , over his feet, yeah yeah thats right over his feet.

Y’know, it’d be neat for you or some fans to get together and do a podcast or chapterized reading of your works- it’d be another way for folks to experience your material.
If you ever decide to do it, or organize a group, I’d be happy to be in on a Skype recording session, my voice is Ok for teenagers to early 30s male parts, and I know techy folks that are a good range of types.
